On the night of January 19–20, the Soviet army entered Baku, executing a criminal order from the top leadership of the USSR. Without declaring a state of emergency and without warning the civilian population, they used tanks, armored vehicles, and live ammunition to gun down peaceful citizens. Women, children, and the elderly were killed. The blood spilled on the streets of the capital became direct proof that the Soviet regime—and particularly its leader at the time, Mikhail Gorbachev—had chosen the path of terror in response to the Azerbaijani people’s pursuit of freedom. On the 40th day after the funerals, I was filming at the burial site of the murdered victims in Baku's Nagorny Park. A wall of grief made it almost impossible to shoot. Everything I documented was captured through tears.
